{"id":288,"date":"2020-12-21T07:34:06","date_gmt":"2020-12-21T07:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ieltsnpte.com\/updates\/?p=288"},"modified":"2023-01-06T04:22:15","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T04:22:15","slug":"canadas-2021-2023-immigration-targets-positive-signal-for-international-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ieltsnpte.com\/updates\/canadas-2021-2023-immigration-targets-positive-signal-for-international-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s Immigration Targets Positive Signal for International Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Positive signal to international students as Canada sets immigration targets<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Canada continues to be a top destination for international students, and a place for many to build their futures.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>According to the<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/notices\/supplementary-immigration-levels-2021-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan<\/a>\u00a0<strong>released by the IRCC, Canada hopes to welcome 1,233,000 permanent residents to Canada by the end of 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In his<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/corporate\/publications-manuals\/annual-report-parliament-immigration-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual report<\/a>, <strong>the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship states: &#8220;Canada continues to be a safe and welcoming destination for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers [&#8230;]\u00a0Even as we adjust to the extraordinary challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot lose sight of the enormous benefits immigration presents to our prosperity and way of life.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Canadian government has announced plans to welcome some 1,233,000 new permanent residents into the country between 2021 and 2023, something that Universities Canada says will be a \u201cpositive signal\u201d to international students.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The targets were<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/notices\/supplementary-immigration-levels-2021-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a>\u00a0<strong>by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada following the tabling of the<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/corporate\/publications-manuals\/annual-report-parliament-immigration-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the report, minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco Mendicino said that\u00a0immigrants enrich Canada \u201cbeyond measure\u201d, and no accounting of the country\u2019s progress over the last century and a half is complete without including the contributions of newcomers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Canada now aims to welcome 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, 411,000 in 2022, and 421,000 in 2023 \u2013 a goal which stakeholders have said will be partly achieved by international students remaining in the country after their studies.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThese newly announced immigration targets are a positive signal to international students that Canada is eager to welcome skilled talent from around the world,\u201d\u00a0 Wendy Therrien, director of research and external relations at<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.univcan.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universities Canada<\/a>, <strong>told\u00a0<em>The PIE News<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGraduates of Canadian Citizenship can benefit from clear government pathways to immigration if they wish to stay in Canada after their studies,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cosmina Morariu, senior manager of<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fragomen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fragomen<\/a>, <strong>a leading law firm that deals with immigration services, explained that a study permit is one of the main gates into Canada.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt allows you to come and study and then after you finish your studies you can get a post-graduate work permit, which is an open, very flexible permit that allows you to work for any employer, at any location in Canada.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe maximum duration you can get on that permit is three years, so it is very convenient. The moment you have one year of employment in Canada you can apply for permanent residence,\u201d she told The PIE.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Morariu explained that students who applied for permanent residence after completing one year on a post graduate work permit would make up a significant part of the IRCC\u2019s targets.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ieltsnpte.com\/updates\/category\/migration-pr\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Want to immigrate to Canada?<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Watch the Below video for Everything you need to know about Canada\u2019s Immigration Levels Plan 2021-2023:<\/strong><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/notices\/supplementary-immigration-levels-2021-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data<\/a>\u00a0<strong>provided by IRCC gives a breakdown of which categories of immigrants the country hopes to welcome. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The highest group is economic immigrants \u2013 with targets currently being set at bringing 723,500 of this group into the country between 2021 and 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The economic immigrant group is further broken down into six sections including, <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Federal High Skilled, <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Federal Business, <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic Pilots: Caregivers; Agri-Food Pilot; <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program, <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Provincial Nominee Program and Quebec Skilled Workers and Business.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-291 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ieltsnpte.com\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/22025ac8-3499-431b-a997-d08442cee64c-227x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ieltsnpte.com\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/22025ac8-3499-431b-a997-d08442cee64c-227x300.png 227w, https:\/\/ieltsnpte.com\/updates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/22025ac8-3499-431b-a997-d08442cee64c.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen you look at the breakdown of the levels, it doesn\u2019t specifically say that it is for students. But normally students will fall under the economic class, so for example the federal high skilled stream will include the Canadian experience class candidates.\u201d said\u00a0Morariu.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSo within those admissions for the federal high skilled [\u2026] a proportion of that, if not the majority will be Canadian experience class, which comes from the student population.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>International students are likely to play a significant role in the government achieving its immigration targets between 2021 and 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Morariu said that the government\u2019s plans to welcome so many permanent residents is \u201cambitious\u201d, but \u201cdoable if you are targeting students\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIs Canada attractive to international students? Yes. If you look at the numbers, and the Canadian government has a website where it publishes the number of applications that it receives for students, workers, permanent residents and how many were adjudicated, you see that last year alone there were over 400,000 applications for students.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe majority of the students are from India, China, Brazil, Korea, Vietnam, and now with an increase from the US as well. The numbers are a bit lower for 2020, but looking back at 2015, they almost doubled up until 2019.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think we are going to see more people applying for study permits, because it is very easy to get your foot in the door and apply for permanent residence,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Sonja Knutson, director, internationalization office interim at the<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mun.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Memorial University of Newfoundland<\/a>, <strong>said that\u00a0Canada\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/news\/an-abundance-of-good-news-stakeholders-react-to-canadas-intled-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international education strategy<\/a>\u00a0<strong>has been successful largely because of the country\u2019s reputation for straightforward immigration pathways, openness to diverse cultures and recognition that adjusting to new demography is a \u201ctwo-way street\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSo while the immigration announcement does not yet provide detail about direct impacts on international students, we do believe the news will help international student recruitment since students and their parents continue to see Canada as a safe and welcoming place,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"FFd1rTzDX7\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/news\/positive-signal-to-intl-students-as-canada-sets-immigration-targets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Positive signal to int&#8217;l students as Canada sets immigration targets<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
