Practice for Test
After the first step towards Australian Citizenship, you’ll need to keep practising to get a good grip on the content. For the same reason,
- We recommend taking the Practice Citizenship Test on the website of the Department of Immigration. Take it as many times as you possibly can
- We strongly advise taking the practice test because the questions and wording used therein are in the same format as in the actual test
- Hence, this is a very useful tool in your preparation for the citizenship test
Structure of Test
Next, what can you expect in the actual citizenship test?
There are 4 sections in which the 20 MCQs are broken up:
- Australia and its people
- Australia’s democratic beliefs, rights and liberties
- Government and the law in Australia

What Course is to be followed?
There are plenty of paid courses available claiming to help you pass the test, but the Australian Government doesn’t recommend or endorse any of them. The Our Common Bond booklet contains everything you need to know for the test. You’re better off studying just the booklet.
How to Pass the Test?
Next, how to pass the Australian Citizenship Test?
- As already mentioned, you’ll need at least a 75% score to pass the test
- Additionally, you’ll need to score full marks in the Australian Values, which means you’ll need to get all the 5 MCQs correct in the test pertaining to the Values.
The values you must be aware of are as follows:
- Commitment to the Rule of Law- Everyone in Australia is bound by its laws, including the police and politicians
- Parliamentary Democracy- Being a democratic country- Australian citizens over 18, elect politicians who represent them
- Freedom of Speech- People in Australia have a legal right to express and discuss their ideas and also question the government, so long as it is within the law
- Freedom of Association- Australians are free to join and leave any group as long as it’s legal. One cannot be punished just for associating with people
- Freedom of Religion- Without any fear of discrimination and with no national religion of its own, the people here can follow whatever religion or beliefs they want, provided they’re legal. Above all, Religious intolerance is unacceptable here.
- Equality of all people under the law- Everyone has equal rights and no person shall be at a disadvantage or disregarded just because of their religion, race, origin, sexual orientation, age, disability or gender
- Equality of Opportunity and a ‘fair go’- As an important aspect of fairness in Australia, it is believed that each is entitled to an equal opportunity regardless of their family background, wealth, ethnicity or any other irrelevant attributes. If you got skills, you have a ‘fair go’ at getting the job!
To sum up, all these values are set in place in order to treat each other with respect and tolerance, even if we don’t always agree.
Above all else, keep yourself calm, as tests tend to make one nervous. Remember if it isn’t your day, you can always retake the test.
